Animals die excruciating deaths when suffocated by plastic bags
Often imported from Asia – high Co2 emissions during transport
People in Europe use over 251 billion plastic bags per year. If these plastic bags were joined together, they would form a chain that would reach 1600 times around the earth. Once disposed of, plastic bags are dangerous to animals, who often cannot distinguish food from plastic. According to Greenpeace, a whopping 100,000 sea mammals and 1 million seabirds die of suffocation every year. It takes 100-500 years for a plastic bag to completely decompose, depending on the material used.

"biodegradable" plastic bags
waste of comestible goods
practically speaking, not biodegradable
genetically modified
The „biodegradable“ plastic bag does not seem to provide a real solution, either. Biodegradable plastics are often produced out of corn starch. As famine still is a reality for a multitude of people, food should not be used in the production of these bags. In addition, the corn used is often genetically modified. The current „biodegradable“ plastic bags take a long time to decay. If thrown away in the bio bin, bio plastic bags only have a short retention period. Therefore they cannot decay, but have to be filtered out of the biological waste in a lenghty process in which they get burned together with regular waste in a manner that is harmful to the environment. If thrown into the recycling bin, it is even worse. Because the bio plastic bags look very similar to normal plastic bags, the „bio“ plastic bags cannot be distinguished from the others – which reduces the quality of the recycled plastics altogether. This is why environmental and conservation organisations disapprove of „bio“ plastic bags.

The PaperJohn
renewable raw material
100 % biodegradable
produced in the EU
Our standard version of the PaperJohn is made to 100 % out of kraftpaper. The kraftpaper is recycled. As the paper fibres get shorter and shorter with recycling, we add fresh paper in an amount as small as possible. This fresh paper stems from an ecologoical foresting with at least FSC certification, a certification recognized by the major environmental associations such as the WWF. Since we use paper, our raw material stems from renewable wood instead of the valuable and finite resource petroleum. The PaperJohn is 100% biodegradable. It dissolves neatlessly but still leaves a lasting impression. The PaperJohn encourages you to ride your bike more often. Due to our several production facilities equipped with the newest technology, the ecological footprint of the PaperJohn's production and transportation is kept to a minimum.
